Ignored Virender Singh to get “Best Sportsperson with Disability”

Three-time Deaflympics medallist Virender Singh, who is more popularly known as the ‘Goonga Pahalwan’ has been chosen by the ministry of social justice and empowerment for the ‘Best sportsperson with Disability’. He will be awarded by minister Thawar Chand Gehlot on December 3.

Deaf and mute Virender has a legendary status amongst the sporting fraternity for his achievements despite being ignored by the national federation for the World Championships for long now. He became popular after a documentary named “Goonga Pehelwan” was made on him that went to win the highest Indian film honour, National Film Award in the year 2015.

Virender has even been in the news of late after the governing body banned him for speaking out about the irregularities in the federation. It resulted in him missing the Worlds in Russia. However, that has not stopped the ministry of social justice and empowerment who, under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), has been honoring very year a distinguished sportsperson with a disability to choose the legendary sportsman.

Previously the recipient of the Arjuna Award, Virender would receive the award from minister Thawar Chand Gehlot on December 3.
