Bajrang Punia reinstated World No. 1 in UWW rankings

Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia has got back to the topmost position in the rankings of United World Wrestling on Wednesday in the men’s 65kg freestyle category. With 58 ranking points under his belt, Punia went past Russia’s Akhmed Chakaev to be at the number one position in the rankings.

After winning gold medals in the Asian Games, Jakarta and the Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast, Bajrang Punia has now regained his position back at the topmost position of the UWW rankings which were released on Wednesday. The 25-year-old grappler managed to get 58 ranking points to overtake Akhmed Chakaev of Russia who has 21 points to his name.

The wrestler had earlier made it to the World No.1 in November last year after winning the gold medals at the Asiad and CWG. Punia had finished second in the World Wrestling Championships last year and is currently practising for the Asian Championships which will be played in China from April 23.

In the last edition of the Asian competition in 2018, Punia had bagged a bronze in Bishkek. He had a brilliant run at the Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov tournament in Bulgaria as he managed to finish the event with a gold medal in his weight category.
