Govindan Lakshmanan and PU Chitra clinched gold medals in their respective 5000m and 1500m races as India took their medal tally to 3 golds, 2 silvers, and 2 bronzes in the Asian Indoor Games. They are now ninth with Turkmenistan leading the table with 39 golds, 27 silvers and 18 bronzes.

India have started quite impressively in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games with their athletes already adding a bunch of medals to their tally on just the fourth day of the competition. After the field and track athletes achieved one gold, two silvers and one bronze yesterday, the runners and wrestlers compounded it on Tuesday with some brilliant displays.

Two more gold medals were added by Govindan Lakshmanan and PU Chitra in men's 5000m and women's 1500m races. Following his brilliant win in the 5000m outdoor title in the Asian Championships held in Bhubaneswar in July, Lakshmanan took just 8 minute and 2.30 seconds to finish the race yesterday.

India were hugely relieved as Chitra got back to the track and finished the 1500m race within 4 minutes 27.77 seconds to win the gold after her London World Championships omission had created a massive outrage that even led to a court case. Chitra had also won a gold in the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar.

Dharmender won a bronze in men's freestyle 70kg belt wrestling as his impressive run came to a halt against Turkmenistan’s Annamyradow Yagsymyrat in the semifinals.

A major upset was star sprinter Dutee Chand missing out on a medal narrowly, as she finished fourth in the women's 60m dash. Finishing the run within 7.44 seconds, Chand was a one-hundredth of a second behind bronze winner Olga Safronova (7.43 seconds) of Kazakhstan.
