Khelo India School Games | Wrestlers help Haryana reach top of medal tally

The wrestlers from Haryana won seven of their eight medals on the fifth day of the Khelo India School Games helping Haryana to overtake Delhi in the medals tally. Haryana’s Manu Bhaker claimed the state's eight medals of the day with a record-breaking performance in the 10m air pistol event.

Nitesh Kumar along with Ravi Malik, Ravita Kumari, Vikas, Joginder, Sonam, and Anshu won gold medals in each of their events to help Haryana top the medals tally with 52 medals overall. The day started with Manu Bhaker winning a gold in the 10m air pistol event by breaking the three-year-old junior national record of 385 by scoring 387 in the event which included 13 shots with scores of 10 or above. 

Uttar Pradesh’s Saurabh Choudhary claimed gold in a nail-biting finish in the boy’s 10m air pistol event. Delhi claimed three gold medals in the swimming events as wrestling and swimming were the two majors competitions that ended on Sunday. Himachal Pradesh claimed a gold in Kabaddi (girls) after defeating Delhi 25-19 in the finals. The gold medal in Kabaddi for the boys was won by Delhi who pipped Uttar Pradesh 35-30 in the finals.

In the boys' volleyball semifinals Delhi beat Kerala 3-0 and UP beat Uttarakhand 3-1 whereas among Girls, Maharashtra defeated UP 3-0 and West Bengal came from behind before winning 3-1 against Gujarat.

The medal tally at the end of the fifth day is led by Haryana with 52 medals that included 20 gold, 16 silver, and 16 bronze. They are trailed by Delhi in the second position who have won 48 medals so far which include 16 gold, 18 silver, and 24 bronze medals. Maharashtra is third on the medal tally with 47 medals that include 16 gold medals.
