Asia Para Games | Rio gold medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu to be India’s flag-bearer

Rio Para Olympics gold medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu has been selected as the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent for the third Asian Para Games. Mariyappan was the fourth Indian to clear 1.89m high jump in the T42 category and secured an individual Paralympic gold medal at Rio.

Mariyappan was encountered with an accident in his early days of childhood when he was a five-year-old kid in his village Salem, Tamil Nadu. That accident resulted in his right leg being crushed by a bus and he got a severe injury on his knee as well. However, Mariyappan started playing volleyball in his school days but was advised by his physical education teacher to try high jump and he made a mark to become a para-olympic gold medalist. One of the most respected and decorated para-athletes in the country, Thangavelu will be India's flag-bearer in the para games.

India will field its grand contingent of 302 members including athletes, coaches, officials, support staffs. The Indian contingent initially was not given the entry when they arrived at the Games Village as the Sports Ministry had could not manage to clear funds of USD 2.5 lakh. However, the issue was later resolved and the team is all set to make a mark.
