Rio Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu has been appointed as a deputy collector by the Andhra Pradesh government. Chief Minister N Chandrababu handed over the appointment letter to the star shuttler at the state secretariat in the presence of her parents in a small ceremony on Thursday.

Naidu had promised a Group-I post to Sindhu when she had won the silver medal at the Rio Olympics. And almost a year after the announcement, the state government has now issued orders, mentioning Sindhu is appointed the deputy collector. The shuttler has been asked to report to the concerned commissioner within 30 days.

However, the government had to amend Andhra Pradesh Regulation of Appointments to Public Services and Rationalisation of Staff Pattern and Pay Structure) Act, 1994, as recruitment in public service were only made through the APPSC, selection committee or employment exchange.

Currently, Sindhu is working with Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) as an assistant manager (sports) at its Hyderabad office since 2013.

After getting the appointment letter, Sindhu has expressed her happiness, but clarified that badminton is her first priority and she would continue to concentrate on the sport.

Earlier, the Telangana government had felicitated Sindhu with a cash reward of Rs 5 crore, a residential plot in Hyderabad, while the Andhra government had presented her a cash award worth Rs 3 crore.
