Carolina Marin, PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal welcome new BWF rule
PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal have welcomed new BWF rule that makes it mandatory for the top 15 men's and women's shuttlers to play a minimum of 12 tournaments in a year. Meanwhile, Carolina Marin declared that it was not fair to force players to play so many tournaments in a calendar year.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) recently introduced a new rule which will be implemented from next year which will make it compulsory for the top 15 men's and women's shuttlers to play a minimum of 12 tournaments in a year. Top badminton trio of PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and Carolina Marin talked about this new rule as they met at TOI headquarters for a short meet-up.
Olympian Saina Nehwal, who has been subject to various career-threatening injuries over the years, welcomed the move and highlighted how badminton should take inspiration from other sports like Tennis and Golf and follow the grand slam format.
“By reducing the number of tournaments, there is little chance of players getting injured. Why have 20 tournaments a year? They can just do four, five Grand Slams with more money in,” Nehwal said.
PV Sindhu, who recently clinched the BWF finals title for the first time in her career, also talked up the move made by the BWF.
“At this rate, we definitely can't give our best or be at the highest level all the time. I would say that we should have limited tournaments and prepare well,” Sindhu told TOI reporters.
Meanwhile, former world number one Carolina Marin, criticised the new system being implemented by BWF which the Spaniard felt was detrimental towards shuttlers across the globe.
“If you want to be professional, they cannot do this to the players. Right now they are forcing players to play so many tournaments and we are getting injured,” Marin added.
