Indonesia Open | HS Prannoy stuns Lin Dan; Saina Nehwal makes it to Round 2

Indian shuttler HS Prannoy displayed grit in his 21-15, 9-21, 21-14 win over the legendery Lin Dan to advance to the second round of the Indonesia Open badminton event. Meanwhile, CWG gold medalist Saina Nehwal beat local Dinar Ayustine 21-12, 21-12 to book a spot in the second round.

World number 13, HS Prannoy, managed to stun legendary Chinese star Lin Dan in the opening round itself of the ongoing 2018 BWF Indonesia Open today. Prannoy began well against eighth-ranked Lin Dan and won the first game 21-15. However, the experienced Chinese player came back to win the second game 21-9 and level the match. But the 25-year old Indian held his nerve and went on the beat the two-time Olympic gold medalist in the final game by a scoreline of 21-14. This was Prannoy’s second win over Lin Dan, as the former beat the iconic shuttler previously at the 2015 French Open as well.

Fellow Indian, Sameer Verma also impressed with a  21-9, 12-21, 22-20 win over Danish opponent Rasmus Gemke to book a spot in the second round of the competition. The match between the duo went on for about 60 minutes as Verma made his way to a hard-fought victory.

In the women’s singles category, 2018 Gold Coast CWG gold medalist - Saina Nehwal completed a dominating 21-12, 21- 12 win over local player Dinar Ayustine in a match that lasted 35 minutes. 

However, it wasn’t meant to be for Indian shuttler B Sai Praneeth who was knocked out of the competition at the hands of Wang Tzu Wei of Taiwan. Wei defeated Praneeth 21-10, 21-13 in their encounter. This was Praneeth’s fourth consecutive loss to the Taiwanese player. It was the same for 2018 Gold Coast CWG men’s doubles silver medalists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out of this year’s tournament to the Japanese pair of Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe by a scoreline of 21-8, 21-15. 

Meanwhile, women's doubles pair of Jakkampudi Meghana and Poorvisha S Ram, went down to the Indonesian pair of Agatha Imanuela and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti 11-21, 18-21 in the opening round.

The second part of the opening round will continue tomorrow with the likes of Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu taking the court.
