BWF French Open | Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth seal second round berths

Both Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth won their matches in the first round in straight games defeating their opponents 21-11,21-11 and 21-19, 21-13 respectively. Yesterday, PV Sindhu, too, had booked her place in the second round of the tournament after defeating American Beiwei Zhang 21-17, 21-8.

It was a good start to the Indian campaign in the French Open as PV Sindhu entered the second round of the tournament yesterday setting the tone for other players. Since then, Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth have also progressed to the second round. While Nehwal defeated Saena Kawakami of Japan 21-11, 21-11 to clinch the match in straight games, Srikanth did not have to work too hard for his win as well beating Wong Wing Ki Vincent of Hong Kong in straight games of 21-19, 21-13.

Sai Praneeth also progressed to the second round of the tournament defeating his opponent Gor Coelho of Brazil 21-13, 21-17. However, Sameer Verma, who was dealt a tough draw, lost his first-round encounter to Indonesia’s Jonathan Christi 16-21,21-17, 21-15 in 61 minutes.

In the doubles matches it was mixed bag for India with three wins and two losses. The mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy lost in a close match which stretched to three games 22-24, 21-18, 21-19 to the English pair of Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock. On the other hand, the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and Sumeet Reddy won their encounter against Korean partners Min Hyuk Kang and Kim Wo Ho 21-18,21-17. In another mixed doubles match, the pairing of Rohan Kapoor and Kuhoo Garg was thrashed soundly by the Chinese pairing of Zheng Si Wei and Huang Yaqiong in straight games of 21-5, 21-10.

In the women’s doubles event, the pairing of J Meghna and S Poorvisha won their match 21-12, 21-12. In the last match of the day for the Indians, the Men's doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty clinched the match against the German pairing of Jones Ralfy Jansen and Josche Zurwonne 21-13, 21-15 in 35 minutes.
