Indian shuttlers Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy, who were the first Indian pair to compete in the Olympics back in 2016, pulled off a major coup as they defeated Olympic silver medalists - Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong of Malaysia - in the pre-quarterfinals of the USD 700,000 Japan Open badminton tournament in Tokyo on Wednesday.

The duo registered a hard-fought 15-21 23-21 21-19 win over the Malaysian pair to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament. National champions - Attri and Reddy, saved a match point in the second game and staged a dramatic come back from a 17-19 deficit to upset world number 10 V Shem and Tan Wee in a game that went on for 54 minutes. The Indian duo will face China's He Jiting and Tan Qiang next in the BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament.

But it was lights out for Indian pairs of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty along with Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy, who were all knocked out of the tournament after losing their matches in the men’s doubles and women’s doubles category, respectively.
