BWF Singapore Open | PV Sindhu targets major laurels in Singapore
PV Sindhu will hope to put behind her recent struggles she has seen on the international circuit as she intends to go all the way at the BWF Singapore Open. Sindhu suffered a first-round exit at the All England Championship and lost in the second round of Malaysia Open to Sung Ji Hyun.
Indian ace shuttler PV Sindhu hopes to place aside her recent run of below-par outings on the international circuit. The Olympic silver-medalist will spearhead the Indian challenge at the $355,000 Singapore Open which is slated to start on Tuesday.
The former world number one claimed the BWF World Tour Finals in December last year but has looked unlike her usual self since then especially in her last few outings on the global stage. Sindhu made a first-round exit at the All England Championship and lost in the second round of Malaysia Open as she was beaten by South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun on both occasions. The former Olympic silver medalist entered the semifinals at India Open but went down to He Bingjiao of China holding a sizeable advantage in the first game. Another former world number one, Saina Nehwal, is the only Indian badminton player to claim a title this season after she secured the crown at the Indonesia Masters following the injury of Carolina Marin of Spain in the finals. The 29-year old from Hyderabad will play a fast-rising Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark in the opening round of the Singapore Open.
Amongst the men, Kidambi Srikanth will continue his quest to end his title drought as he begins his campaign against a qualifier at the BWF World Tour Super 500 event in Singapore. Meanwhile, HS Prannoy, who regained some form with a quarterfinal finish at India Open will face-off with France’s Brice Leverdez. In addition to that, Swiss Open finalist B Sai Praneeth has a tough fight ahead against world no 1 and top seed Japan’s Kento Momota.
