Chirag Shetty was adamant that him along with doubles partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy played like champions en route to the BWF Thailand Open title which they won on Sunday. The young pair created history by becoming the first Indian men's doubles pair to win a major super 500 event.

The young men's doubles combination of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy etched their names into history books as they became the first Indian doubles pair to win a Super 500 event by clinching the BWF Thailand Open title on Sunday.

The world number 16 pair pulled off a major upset as they as they defeated reigning world champions and second-ranked Chinese pair of Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen of China in the men's doubles final in Bangkok.

“I am very happy to win the tournament. I am still watching videos on how I played. We played like champions. We never felt inferior.

“They [Hyun and Cheol] were idols for both of us. We had learnt a lot watching them perform,” Shetty was quoted as saying by PTI sources.

Shetty, who won gold at the 2018 Gold Coast CWG mixed team event, added that he hoped to break into the top five of the doubles ranking alongside Rankireddy and successfully defend their Hyderabad Open title.

“There are expectations because we won Thailand Open. This time around, there are a lot more players because since it’s an Olympic year. The competition is lot more tougher this time. But, we beat the current world champions. We have to give our best. If we play well, we can win this tournament,” Shetty added.
