BWF World Senior Championships | India win three medals on final day to end on good note

Indian shuttlers concluded the World Senior Championships in some manner as Vijay Lancy Mascarenhas and Ajeet Hari Dass won gold medals on the last day. Moreover, Manjusha Sudhir Sahasrabudhe and the pair of Prabhu Naik Naidu Kona and Suzanne Venglet won silver medals in their respective categories.

India capped off a successful BWF World Senior Championships tournament on Sunday with three podium finishes, including a gold and two silver medals. As many as 45 categories were played through the course of the competition with participation from 56 countries and more than 1,500 players.

Vijay Lancy Mascarenhas and Ajeet Hari Dass opened the country’s account for the day by claiming the men’s 40-plus doubles title for themselves. After going 19-21 down in the first set, the duo of former national level players staged a valiant fightback to end up winning the next two games 21-17, 21-19. The underdogs’ victory meant the third and fourth seed pairing of  Esben B. Kaempegaard and Morten Eilby Rasmussen had to settle for silver.

The two paid tribute to late Sudhakar Reddy by dedicating their victory to him after the renowned coach suffered a cardiac arrest during the course of the tournament and failed to survive.

“Coming back from a game down to win the title against a seeded pair gives us immense satisfaction. We would like to dedicate this medal to Shri Sudhakar Reddy, who was not just a celebrated coach but also an inspiration to us all,” said Mascarenhas, reported Scroll.in..

Meanwhile, Manjusha Sudhir Sahasrabudhe could not emulate the men’s achievement in her summit clash as she lost to top seed Zhou Xin 21-14, 13-21, 13-21 in the 55-plus women’s singles category.

The last medal of the day came when Prabhu Naik Naidu Kona and Suzanne Venglet also lost the final in the 50-plus mixed doubles division. After a brilliant run, English top seeds Rajeev Bagga and Elizabeth Austin proved to be too much for them as they lost in straight games, 13-21, 14-21.
