Indonesia Masters | Saina Nehwal wins title after Carolina Marin retires hurt

Saina Nehwal was declared as the winner of this year’s Indonesia Masters event after Carolina Marin retired with an injury in the opening game of the final being played in Jakarta. Marin had taken a seven-point lead and was up 9-2 when she injured her right knee while completing an overhead smash.

Saina Nehwal was crowned as the winner of this year’s Indonesia Masters which was being played in Jakarta this week. Nehwal was up against long-time rival and world number one player Carolina Marin of Spain in the final. However, Marin was forced to retire hurt during the match which resulted Saina being crowned as the winner.

Marin, who is the reigning Olympic and World Champion, began the game with an aggressive approach as she looked to pile pressure on her Indian counterpart. Marin had taken a seven-point lead and was up 9-2 it appeared that she injured her right knee while finishing an overhead forehand smash on the jump. The Spaniard immediately fell onto the court, wriggled in pain before getting up, but bravely decided to continue the match.

Saina, who has been suffering from injury problems of her own in the past, offered support to Marin as she claimed that what happened in Jakarta last night was a rather unfortunate event.

“It is important year for all of us. This was not good at all. She is a tough competitor, she started off well and it is unfortunate what happened today.

“I just came out of injury. I played this events to see how good is this. and I’m happy I could play the semifinals at Malaysia and final here. Looking forward to get back to shape and play next tournament. I have been getting injured in the last few years. I always try to come back stronger, there is no secret. I want to thank physios and coaches who are supporting me a lot,” Saina told PTI sources.
