Indian men’s singles shuttlers Parupalli Kashyap, Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma lost their respective first-round matches at the BWF French Open and bowed out of the tournament. On the other hand, in women’s singles, Saina Nehwal made her way into the second round with a win in straight games.

The Indian men didn’t have a great day on the court as Parupalli Kashyap, Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma all crashed out in the opening round. Subhankar Dey is the only Indian male shuttler who is in contention now in the ongoing championship in Paris.

Srikanth was beaten 15-21, 21-7, 21-14 by Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen while Kashyap went down to Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong by straight games of 11-21, 9-21. Verma faced a tough challenge from Japanese shuttler Nishimoto in the first round and suffered a 22-20, 18-21, 18-21 defeat.

In the women’s singles event, Saina Nehwal marched ahead into round 2 by registering an emphatic win against Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong. The Olympic medallist from India got the better of her opponent in straight games of 23-21, 21-13 in the match in Paris.

Meanwhile, India’s challenge, in the mixed doubles events, has also come to an end as both the pairs - Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Ashwini Ponnappa and Pranaav Jerry Chopra-N Sikki Reddy – lost their respective matches. Rankireddy and Ponappa lost 17-21, 18-21 against fourth seed Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yujung of Korea while Chopra and Reddy were defeated by England’s Chris Adcock and Gabriellle Adcock 13-21, 18-21.

However, Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy have also been knocked out of the men’s doubles events while Ashwini Ponappa and N Sikki Reddy had the same fate in the women’s doubles. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have, however, made it to the second round by registering an easy win against Jelle Maas and Robin Tabeling. The Indian pair defeated the Dutch pair 21-16, 21-14 in their men’s doubles first-round match.
