Indian basketball player Amjyot Singh has been in complete shock following the Basketball Federation of India’s decision to impose a one-year ban citing 'gross indiscipline'. The BFI handed Palpreet Singh and Amjyot bans for “indisciplinary activities” before and during the Commonwealth Games.

The BFI has handed national hoopsters Palpreet Singh and Amjyot Singh one-year bans on Monday revealing that both the players’ objectionable actions had rendered them unfit to represent the national side and even be a part of the national team. The issue happened as Palpreet flaunted a picture on Snapchat, abusing the nation after consumption of hard liquor. On the other hand, Amjyot has been charged with slapping and abusing teammate Arshpreet Singh Bhullar during the CWG and has also been held guilty of misbehavior with the national coach Rajinder Singh during the CWG. However, Amjyot stated that he is completely surprised by the suspension.

“I am shocked and still unable to understand the reason behind the ban. I have been playing for the Indian team for the last 10 years. Since last year I’m trying to improve as a player here in the USA. I always want to play for India, it’s an honour for me. That’s the reason I always come back to play for the national side,” Amjyot Singh told TOI.

“I’m not psychic to do such things. There was an altercation in the normal course of practice. There was a disagreement over a foul call given to me by the coach. I am the last person to start such things, my reaction was only in self-defence,” Amjyot said.

Earlier, on Monday, while sharing the details of the ban, BFI secretary Chander Mukhi Sharma had revealed that Amjyot was “indulged in groupism and tried to break up the team into factions during the Gold Coast event.”

But countering the statement, Amjyot, who is arguably India’s best player at the moment, said, “What will I get by dividing the team? Whenever my services are needed by the national team, I come and stay in India for a very short time. In that short duration, how will I find time to create factions within the team. When I am with the Indian team, I would rather think of improving my game and focus on helping the team win games. Why would I indulge in things like this? I am focused on making my future with the NBA G-League team.”

Amjyot claimed that he had tried many attempts to contact Sharma so as to explain his side of the story, but none picked up the call and he wasn’t given a chance to do so. Although he reached Sharma’s place on May 24 after being asked, he was made to wait for the entire day but the BFI secretary never met him.
