Indian boxer Vijender Singh on Tuesday accepted British pro boxing star Amir Khan's challenge for a bout, saying it will give a big boost to the sport in the nation. He also added that it might take him one more year to be ready for Amir and believes that the fight will draw international limelight.
“I accept the challenge of Amir Khan and I am sure this fight will be a big boost to boxing in our country.
“As we both fight in different weight categories so will have to see whether Amir (middleweight) gains or I (super middleweight) have to lose weight. I have started my professional boxing career last year only and have made only 4 appearances in the pro ring,” Vijender told PTI.
Vijender had made his pro-boxing debut in October last year and has been on an unbeaten run, defeating Sonny Whiting, Dean Gillen, Samet Hyuseinov, and Alexander Horvath via knockouts. The 2008 Olympics bronze-medallist will take on Frenchman Matiouze Royer in his fifth bout on April 30 at the Copper Box Arena in London.
He insisted that his bout against the Olympic silver medallist and two-time world champion, who recently announced his plans to start boxing academies in India and Pakistan, would draw a lot of attention from all over the world.
“It might take me just one more year when I will be ready to fight against Amir Khan. I am sure this fight will attract international limelight and attention. Currently I am focusing on my next fight scheduled for April 30 against Matiouze Royer at Copper Box Arena,” he added.
