Taking inspiration from Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom, a budding young boxer Andleeb Zehra from Kashmir is breaking the social boundaries through her boxing skills. Recently, the young prodigy has been in news when she won the silver medal in the State Boxing Championship held in Jammu.

Since childhood Andleeb Zehra, who hails from a middle-class family in Magam village in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, has been fond of sports. But her fondness for the sport of boxing grew after she watched Indian boxing great Mary Kom in action. Andleeb, then, decided to join boxing and started training in the indoor stadium from professional coaches.

So far, Andleeb has participated in many events in the state and recently won Silver medal in state Boxing Championship which was held at Jammu. The young pugilist now dreams of becoming like her idol Mary Kom and win medals for her country. Her coach, Farooq Khan, is also confident that Andleeb has the sporting skills to win many medals in the future.

Despite coming from the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which, like many other states in India, does not give importance to females taking up sports, Andleeb credits her parents and friends for the support and encouragement she has been given to take up the sport.

"My family supported me. In fact my family and fervidness were very happy with my decision," Andleeb said, reported ANI.

She also says that a balance of both studies and sports is needed to lead a healthy life.

"I don`t think it would have any negative impact on studies. I reckon sports and education carry equal importance. It is necessary to have a healthy life. I think boxing is a very good sport for women. This helps them to have a self-defence. This sport provides good opportunities to women, as such one can participate in Olympics as well," she added.
