India’s boxing star Mary Kom might skip this year’s Asian Games so that she is in the best possible shape of the World Championships which is scheduled to take place in November. The 35-year-old, who has been competing non-stop for the last five months, feels her body needs some rest.

Mary Kom is a star in India and an inspiration for a lot of youngsters and is arguably one of the best women boxers the country has ever produced. Mary Kom who is participating in the ongoing Commonwealth Games where she reached the final may miss the 2018 Asian Games with one eye on the World Championships. She wants to be fully fit and ready for the World Championships and hence may take a small break.

The Asian Games is slated to take place in August-September in Indonesia while the World Championships is scheduled to take place in India in November.

“I am thinking of skipping Asian Games, if I am asked I will go but I will take a decision on that later. I have to ensure that I am in top shape for the World Championships so may be I will skip Asian Games and take a small break,” Mary Kom was quoted saying by Indian Express.

Mary Kom has also been on the road for the last five months and has competed non-stop since November starting with the Asian Championships.

“The body needs some rest too. I am not completely ruling out competing in the Asian Games but it is definitely on my mind that perhaps I will give it a miss,” she added.

She will be one of the favourites to win the World Championships which will take place in India for the first time after 2006, an event where the Manipuri girl won the gold medal.
