The experienced duo of Mary Kom and Sarita Devi have been assured of their third successive international medal after they entered the semifinals of the 69th Strandja memorial boxing tournament on Thursday. India is assured of six medals so far in the tournament courtesy of women boxers.

Sarita has been enjoying a spectacular run of form recently. After winning a bronze and silver medal at the Asian Championships and India Open respectively, the Manipuri girl edged past China’s Qi Yawen in her last-eight stage bout.

While her performance was spectacular, five-time World champion Mary Kom, who came to the tournament on the back of gold medals at the Asian Championships and India Open, also defeated Steluta Duta of Romania in her quarterfinal contest to assure India a medal.

While it was a splendid day out for the women’s boxers, men’s suffered a rather ordinary outing after Dheeraj Rangi bowed out of the competition after losing his opening bout to Louis Colin Richarno.

Now, India are assured of at least six medals in the tournament all thanks to women boxers - Seema Punia (+81kg), Saweety Boora (75kg), Mena Kumari Devi (54kg), and Bhagyabati Kachari (81kg). While Saweety and Meena already won their quarterfinal contests, Seema and Bhagyabati got byes to the semis.
