Indian boxer Meena Kumari Maisnam has bagged a gold medal in the 54kg weight category at the Cologne World Cup in Germany on Saturday. On the other hand in the 57kg and 64kg categories, Sakshi and Pwilao Basumatary lost their final bouts and had to settle for a silver medal each.

India had a decent outing at the Boxing World Cup in Cologne as it finished with a total of five medals including only one gold on the final day of the competition. Maisnam was the only pugilist from India who managed to finish at the top of the podium. The Manipuri boxer won against Thailand’s Machai Bunyanut in the summit clash. The final match was the only bout for her as she had directly booked a berth in the final because of a small draw.

On the other hand, the youth World Champion Sakshi lost her last bout after an excellent run in the competition from her very first bout. In the 57kg category final, she lost to Irish pugilist Michaela Walsh in a clear 0-5 verdict. China’s Chengyu Yang got the better of another Indian finalist Basumatary in the 64kg weight category in the event.

Earlier in the tournament, Pinki Rani and Parveen were knocked out from the semi-finals in the 51kg and 60kg respectively and settled with a bronze each. India completed the tournament with a total of five medals which includes one gold and two silver and bronze medals each.

Gaurav Solanki (52kg) and Mohammed Hussamuddin (56kg) were the two Indians who had won medals in the last edition of the prestigious European tournament.
