Mary Kom aims to clinching gold at Tokyo Olympics
MC Mary Kom has expressed her desire to bag a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics, which is scheduled to be played in Tokyo. The Indian boxer has also stated that she is delighted to be ranked as the No. 1 female boxer in the world and thanked all the people who have supported her.
Indiaâs champion boxer MC Mary Kom has a lot of feathers on her hat. She has the record of being the six-time champion in the World Championships with the 35-year-old's most achievement being a gold medal in the light flyweight category at the world event in Delhi. Apart from the World Championships, she has gold medals in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games and a bronze in the Olympics in 2012 London Games.Â
However, she has one dream to achieve and that is a gold medal at the Olympics and has her eyes set on the upcoming Tokyo Olympics to be held next year.
"After all these years, I feel there's nothing much to achieve. I have all the medals in the game, right? I have medals from the Olympics, Asian Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games. But I am still hungry for that one medal and that's gold at the Olympics. That is something I am excited about. It is something that keeps me going and it's that one chance I want," said Mary Kom, reported TOI.Â
Speaking about the issues surrounding International Olympic Committee and the boxing association â AIBS, the Indian boxer informed, "I am not sure what the status is as of now. It's up to IOC and AIBA. I am not worried about myself but for the youngsters. They have trained for many, many years and it will be upsetting if they don't get a chance to win medals for their country at the Olympics. For me, I have already won a
"Tokyo 2020 is a very big challenge. London 2012 was very big as well. It was the first time I fought in the 51kg category. I missed the qualification for Rio in 2016. This time, I am trying and looking forward to it. I need to plan things differently and the first thing is to make sure I qualify. I feel that if it's possible, I should be training with young boys who are stronger than me. There's no point training with partners whose game I already know. I can beat them easily. But it's difficult to fight boxers whose game you don't know, and that's what I want."
Mary Kom is currently ranked No. 1 in womenâs 48 kg category in the world and she is not surprised by that achievement.Â
"I am not surprised that I am ranked No. 1. I am so happy that my performances have been recognised. I am grateful for the love and support that I have received from the entire country. Your prayers have helped me win a lot of medals," she said.
