India’s tally of assured medals at the Asian Youth Boxing Championships increased to 12 after four more boxers advanced to the semi-final stages at Ulaanbaatar on Wednesday. On the other hand, Vijaydeep (69kg) and Lakshya Chahar (81kg) lost out in the quarter-finals to split verdicts.

In the men’s draw, Satender Singh (91kg), who defeated Korean Haneul Jung to make the last-four, was joined by Selay Soy (49kg), who put it past Tzu-Chen of Taiwan. In the women’s events, Poonam (54kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (69kg) made it to the medal rounds, with Poonam punching past Caranagan Kaye of Philippines, and Arundhati defeating Pin-Ju Chen of Taiwan.

The quarter-final bouts on Thursday also meant curtains for the other Indians in the fray. In the men’s competition, Akshay Kumar (64kg) lost to Darkhan Duiisebay of Kazakhstan. Akshay was followed by three Indian boxers, who all lost out on split verdicts — Vijaydeep to Rustambek Uulu Nurading of Kyrgyzstan and Lakshya to Shokhjakhon Abdullev of Uzbekistan in the men’s events, and Rajni (48kg) to Sinchara Hikaru of Japan among the women.

The four who did qualify for the medal rounds join six other Indian boxers who had advanced to the semi-final stage on Tuesday, while two others got a direct entry.
