The Boxing Federation of India has finally announced, in their recently conducted meeting, that all the medal winners from the upcoming World Championships would be handed Olympic qualifier berths. In case no one wins, separate trials would be held among the top four boxers based on their ratings.

With the first Olympic qualifier scheduled to be held in February next year and the second one in May, the BFI has announced that winners in Russia would be getting direct berths in India’s boxing contingent for the first Olympic qualifying tournaments. The men’s boxing event in Russia is scheduled to take place in Ekaterinberg from September 9, while the women’s competition has been scheduled to begin on October 3 in Ulan-Ude.

“The medallist of AIBA World Championship 2019 will be sent directly to the first Olympic qualifier to be held in China,” read the minutes of a BFI meeting, reported Scroll.

The meeting, which was attended by its brass, the coaching staff, and the selection committee members, also decided upon the selection criteria for women. “…the gold/silver medallist of AIBA World Championships will be sent directly to the first Olympic qualifier in China,” it further read.

There has also been a provision made if the pugilists failed to win a medal in any of the categories. The federation has decided that, in such a case, they would be holding trials between the top four boxers of that division based on performance ratings given by the respective head coaches.

The second Olympics qualifier, which would be held in May, would be medal winners from the India Open getting direct berths as the rest get selected through trials. “The best performer at the India Open will be selected. In case the scenario is not clear, then there will be trials among top two boxers of India Open, selected by head coaches and selection committee. Selection Trials will be held around 3rd-4th April 2020,” the minutes of the meeting read.
