Viswanathan Anand has asserted that Virat Kohli got a bit emotional and had no control while he asked a fan to “leave India” on social media last week. The chess legend has also mentioned that in sports you see many characters and the one of the Indian skipper fits him the best.

The Indian captain was criticised and trolled after he asked a cricket fan to leave India on November 5 as he called Kohli overrated and said that the English and Australian batsmen are better than the Indians. The skipper slammed him by saying, “I don’t mind you not liking me but I don’t think you should live in our country and like other things. Get your priorities right,” for which he drew heavy flak from many corners. Meanwhile, five-time chess world champion Anand has come out to say that he got a bit emotional and he spoke out the first thing that came to his mind at that moment.

“I think he lost control. He got a bit emotional and he just said the first thing that came to his mind,” Anand told PTI on the sidelines of the Tata Steel Chess in Kolkata.

“That’s the attitude he is comfortable with. In sport, you see all characters and this is the character that fits him best. I try to be myself and in the end you should be comfortable in your own skin.”

Anand also stated that a lot has been said on this issue and there is no reason to extend the discussion further. He believes that may be Kohli was feeling weak and not in best of his moods at the moment when he commented the cricket enthusiast about leaving the country. According to the legendary chess player, it is natural to get emotional and lose control and had happened to him as well in the past.

“Maybe Kohli was caught at a weak moment, feeling a bit sensitive and was not in the best mood maybe. That’s my impression. Then he lost control of it,” Anand said.

“People are emotional and they lose control once in a while. It has happened to me even if I was more successful in not showing it. But there are moments when your emotions take over. He has got enough criticism already. It’s over. Those who did not like it, already criticised him so no need to keep piling on it.”
