Nihal Sarin became the youngest Indian chess player to cross 2600 Elo points on FIDE's rating list after his performance in the TePe Sigeman & Co. International Tournament in Malmo. The 14-year-old from Kerala also became the third youngest player in the world to cross the iconic milestone.

14-year old Nihal Sarin came into the TePe Sigeman & Co. International Tournament with a live rating of 2598, as he aimed to break the Indian record set by Parimarjan Negi almost a decade back in 2009. Negi was the youngest Indian to have broken the 2600 FIDE rating barrier back then at the age of 15 years and 11 months.

Sarin successfully did so as he crossed the 2600-rating barrier while playing in Malmo and became the third youngest player in the world to cross the milestone. The Kerala-born chess prodigy has a total tally of 2606 points.

"Right now, they are not based on my results. I just want to play as well as I can and try and win as many games as I can. It is about making good moves throughout the game, and then doing it game after game," Sarin had told PTI sources ahead of the tournament which was held in Sweden.
