Indian Test wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha believes that replacing MS Dhoni in the longer format will be a difficult task for him. Speaking on the sidelines of Indian cricket team’s camp in Bengaluru, Saha said that he is trying hard to win matches for the Indian team, just like Dhoni.

The 31-year-old from West Bengal rose to the position of India’s first choice wicket-keeper after MS Dhoni’s retirement back in December 2014. Saha has played 11 Test matches for the country so far, but his batting record is nothing to be proud of. He has scored just 367 runs from 11 matches at an average of 21.58 with his highest score being 60. Knowing his limitations, Saha said on Wednesday that filling the void created by MS Dhoni will be a difficult task for him. The West Bengal cricketer pointed to the match-winning abilities of Dhoni and said that he is trying to do the same for the country in his own style.

“After Dhoni bhai's retirement, filling his place as the wicketkeeper is not an easy task because he has had won many matches for us. He was a dominant character in world cricket,” Saha told reporters after the Indian team’s training session at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, reported PTI.

“I am trying to do what Dhoni bhai did for us – that is to win matches with contributions coming from his bat as well as by taking catching and effecting stumpings in crucial situations,” he added.

The wicket-keeper batsman also said that he speaks to Dhoni for his advice, whenever he gets an opportunity.

“We always talk to each other on every possible opportunity I and Dhoni get. We talk to each other as we did in IPL and India’s Australia tour. He gave me vital tips on how to keep on bouncy tracks and handle pressure while batting. Not only Dhoni, I also talk to other players as well,” he added.

When asked about how he plans to improve his own performance after a not so impressive start to the Test career, Saha said, “The team has done well in the last one year. We have done well in Australia and Sri Lanka, but my individual progress could have been better and would grab the opportunity to come up trumps in West Indies,” he stated.

“I will try to make a good 70-odd runsto help the team gain advantage over the opposition. If I am successful it will be good for me and the side,” he further added.

The 31-year-old also added that the team will try their best to win the Test series in West Indies to complete a hat-trick of wins, having won it in 2006 and 2011.

“We will go into the series with the combination of Virat and Anil bhai with an intent to win the West Indies series, which we had won last time around when we visited there.

“This time around as well, the team would go all out to play dominating cricket and win the series,” Saha said before concluding the interaction with the media.
