The Cricket Advisory Committee, most famous for selecting Anil Kumble as head coach of the Indian team, is reportedly likely to be expanded into a High Performance Committee. The proposal to merge the Technical Committee and the CAC might be discussed in the board’s general meeting in September.
The CAC, appointed by the BCCI about a year ago, was expected to advise the board on cricket-related international and domestic matters. It comprised of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman, and the trio, along with Sanjay Jagdale, were also a part of the much-publicized selection process for the head coach of the Indian cricket team. The Committee could now see an expansion in scope and personnel, with Anurag Thakur, BCCI President, suggesting the change at the recently-concluded Annual conclave in Dharamsala, reported The Hindu.
“There have been preliminary discussions about expanding the scope of the Cricket Advisory Committee.
“One of the proposals is to merge the Technical Committee and the CAC into a High Performance Committee (HPC). Whether the new committee will be additionally handed over the responsibility of liaising with the India and India-A teams is still not clear,” it reported.
If the plan is given the go-ahead, the HPC would have five or six members, including a coach from the National Cricket Academy and a high-profile cricket operations executive of the BCCI. A recently retired star player might also be approached to be included in the committee.
CAB president Sourav Ganguly heads the Technical Committee, which regulates the domestic tournaments of the BCCI. In case the merger materializes, the HPC will have to meet more often than the CAC, which has had only a single meeting since inception.
Although the move has been welcomed by most, there are some expressing doubts about it.
“What is the role of involving the greats of the game if you don’t utilise them properly.
“The intent of expanding looks good but the purpose can be served only if you give the great cricketers a clear brief and then implement the measures suggested by them,” The Hindu reported a senior administrator as saying.
