BCCI President Anurag Thakur has said that combined teams from the north-eastern states of India would be picked to play in BCCI tournaments across all age groups to develop young cricketers. This comes after the Lodha Panel had touched upon the lack of formal cricketing activities in the region.

“The BCCI is committed to handhold northeastern states and bring them to the mainstream. We have exciting talent coming through and the BCCI will give them a platform to excel. We have taken steps that will lay a solid foundation for cricket development in the northeast," said Anurag Thakur, as per a BCCI media release.

These comments came after his visit to Nagaland and Meghalaya to meet players, officials, and coaches in the Under-16 and Under-19 camps in Dimapur and Shillong. The camp was organised by the BCCI with former cricketers, coaches, physios, trainers and video analysts, who are affiliated with the National Cricket Academy, training a group of boys selected from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Nagaland.

Earlier, the Lodha panel, appointed by the Supreme Court to look into the functioning of the BCCI, had recommended the move and had also pointed out the problems and challenges faced by cricket associations in the region.
