India have a great opportunity to rise up in the ODI rankings if they beat New Zealand by a margin of at least 4-1 in the upcoming five-match ODI series. New Zealand, too, have the incentive of levelling up with Australia at the top of the standings if they can recover from their Test fiasco.
Presently, New Zealand lead India by three ratings in the rankings with 113 and 110 ratings respectively. But after the latter whitewashed the Kiwis in the Test series, it would be a fair assumption that the team from the sub-continent are the major favourites for the ODI series as well.
Should India complete a whitewash in the ODI series as well, they will go third on the table just a rating behind South Africa, who thrashed the Aussies 5-0. New Zealand will, however, drop to fifth with England claiming the vacant fourth spot.
India can only afford to lose one game in the series if they want to move up. A 4-1 win will do nicely as well, but then they will end up five ratings below second-placed South Africa.
Consequently, if India
New Zealand, on the other hand, will find motivation in their opportunity to overtake the Proteas into second place should they be able to inflict a whitewash on the Indians. Such a scenario would see India drop a place to fifth, but based on the events of the last month that
A 4-1 win for the Black Caps would see them go into second place, level with South Africa on ratings at 116, while India
The series starts on Oct 16 at the picturesque Dharamsala grounds in Himachal Pradesh, and with all the plots involved, the series is guaranteed to be an interesting one.
