Sourav Ganguly urges BCCI to consider pay hike for domestic cricketers

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider a significant pay raise for the Ranji cricketers in the country. The domestic players' financial concerns have been overlooked for long now with many senior cricketers raising the issue.
The crying issue of meagre earnings made by an average domestic Ranji cricketer found a new advocate in Sourav Ganguly, as the former Indian opener spoke about it lengthily during the BCCI technical committee meeting in Kolkata on Tuesday
On condition of anonymity, a BCCI technical committee member said PTI, “Ganguly enquired as to what all issues were raised at Ranji Captain and Coaches' Conclave in Mumbai. He was informed that all captains spoke about match fee hike in the domestic tournament which has been an issue."
"When he was told that an average Ranji cricketer earns Rs 10 lakh for a season, he said that it is very less. Dada's argument was not all domestic players have jobs. Therefore, a lot of talented cricketers become insecure if they are injured or out of the team," the official said.
The President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has even reportedly advised the members to give it a serious thought and they have agreed unanimously. Domestic players getting overlooked by the administration has been a long-standing issue and was even brought to the attention of former India coach Anil Kumble by spinner Harbhajan Singh.
The senior Indian cricketer through his letter had emphasized on the plight of Ranji Trophy players across various states. The issue, however, didn’t find a mention in Kumble’s vision about domestic cricketers. But, things might change now as BCCI expects a windfall from IPL broadcast rights that could lead to a pay hike for the domestic cricketers.
