KL Rahul had done well to mark his return from injury with a half century in the second Test against Sri Lanka today. However, his innings will be overshadowed for the manner in which it ended following a horrible mix up with Cheteshwar Pujara and the wicket also allowed Lanka back into the game.

In cricket, taking a run is usually the call of the batsman on strike. However, when the non-striker starts calling the shots in this regard, it usually results in the loss of a wicket for the batting side. And this is exactly what happened today during India’s first innings in the second Test match against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

India were going along nicely at 109 for one with Rahul and Pujara on 57 and 17 respectively. However, things quickly changed in the 31st over of the innings with Rahul facing Herath. The off spinner delivered a full ball at off stump, which the Indian opener pushed to the left of extra cover and tried to take a single.

But Pujara, on the other hand, wasn’t on the same page as his partner, as he took a few strides forward, but then decided against the run. In the meantime, Rahul had already made it halfway down the pitch and there was no way he could make it back to his crease. That resulted in Niroshan Dickwella having ample amount of time to collect a wide throw from Dinesh Chandimal and being able to dislodge the bails.

Rahul’s loss was a turning point in the game as Sri Lanka started clawing their way back into the game as Rangana Herath sent Virat Kohli back to the pavilion.
