Mitchell Marsh silenced his critics with his unbeaten innings of 181 alongside Steven Smith and took Australia to a commanding 146-run lead at the end of the third day. England bowlers had no answer to his batting, as he smashed 28 boundaries to send the social media into complete meltdown.

Mitchell Marsh’s selection had brought tremendous criticism upon Australia selectors ahead of the Perth Test. The brother of Shaun Marsh had almost been discarded from Australia’s Test squad after a horrible show in India earlier this year proved his inability to bat in the middle order.

There was hardly any place for him in the squad until Peter Handscomb’s shaky confidence at Gabba and Adelaide gave the board selection woes and Perth’s flat strip forced them to hand Marsh a chance. Australia desperately needed a partnership when Marsh came to the crease with a paltry average of 21.74 to his name at the time.

The fact that he had just returned from a shoulder surgery gave England hardly anything to worry about the 26-year-old. He took his time to get going in front of his home crowd but once runs came on the board, there was no stopping him. His defensive soft hand turned into hard-hitting hammer at will as he hit 17 boundaries to bring up his maiden Test ton. His confidence looked at its peak as the ball hardly struck anywhere but the middle of his bat. We aren’t seeing Handscomb anytime soon.
