Michael Vaughan has said that there could not have been a better time to make Joe Root the captain of the three lions. He also believes that captaincy would not affect, and instead spur Joe Root to perform better, like Virat Kohli, and unlike the case of many players, including Vaughan himself.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that Joe Root could be to England cricket what Virat Kohli has been to Indian cricket. He believes that the added responsibility of leading the team would inspire Root to become an even better batsman. He thinks the timing of Root taking over couldn't have been more perfect.

“Joe is ready. No question,” Vaughan wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. “I get baffled when people say he is not. In terms of clout, he has everything you require to be captain. What more do you need? He is a good man. He is driven. He is always trying to improve. He never settles with what he has got.”

The additional responsibility of captaining the side sometimes lead to players experiencing slumps with their own personal forms. The same happened with Vaughan as well, who saw his own output as a batsman going down after he became the captain.

“Joe’s biggest challenge will be how captaincy affects his batting,” Vaughan said. “It affected mine … (but) to be honest, I think he will be different to me. He is and move his batting on to another level with the responsibility of captaincy,” he added.

Two other former captains, Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton, also had some words of advice for the latest skipper. Hussain told Sky News, “Two bits of advice I’d give Joe are, one, ‘do it your way’ – because when it goes wrong it’ll be you taking the blame – and the second bit is ‘look after your batting. That is the most important thing. I think England cricket fans will be saying ‘yeah, we love his captaincy, but we want him to continue scoring runs’.”

Atherton says that the fact that his teammates look up to him will always be a positive for Root, but he is stepping into unchartered territories and that there would be unforeseen challenges. “They like him and respect him. He’s got a sunny, upbeat personality – and they’re all good places from which to start. But he’s going to be tested in ways he hasn’t been tested before. He’s no longer just Joe Root – he’s ‘Joe Root, England captain’. With that comes all kinds of added responsibility he’s not had before,” reported SkyNews.
