A case of mistaken identity has cost MP batsman Harpreet Singh a possible IPL berth after his name was mixed up with Mumbai spinner Harmeet Singh, who was found guilty of driving his car straight at the Railway station. A franchise official revealed that they didn’t buy him after reading a tweet.

On Monday, former India Under-19 player Harmeet Singh was arrested for having driven his car onto platform No.1 of Andheri station, in northwest Mumbai, which caused severe chaos and inconvenience to passengers during peak hours. Following that incident, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) confiscated Harmeet’s car and took him into custody.

But that incident appears to have had bigger repercussions for another talented cricketer- Madhya Pradesh’s Harpreet Singh Bhatia as an incorrect tweet forced the franchises to not bid for him.

“We wanted to buy him, but as news came of Harpreet’s arrest, we decided not to do so since it would give the franchise a bad image. But later, when the auction got over, we came to know it was Harmeet and not Harpreet,” an unnamed franchise official said to the Indian Express.

On the day of the auction, ANI, on its official handle, tweeted, “Under 19 cricketer Harpreet Singh detained for driving a car straight into Andheri railway station platform last night.” Although that was corrected after some time, the damage was done and Harpreet remained unsold at the auction.

A visibly disturbed Harpreet, who has been one of domestic cricket’s most consistent performers, said, “I’m mentally disturbed… Mera naamtohkharab ho gayana (I have got a bad name). How can one clear that? I am getting calls from everyone asking what have you done. I was hoping to be picked up at the IPL auction… When my name came, the franchises must have felt why to take a player who is in police custody. I am not bothered about IPL now, it’s gone. But even if you run a search on my name on Google, the first thing that comes up is that I was arrested.”

Harpreet was the highest run-scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 211 runs in four games for Central Zone, with a strike rate of 145. He hit a majestic 92 runs against South Zone to take his team home.
