Wishes and blessings are coming from all quarters for the Indian women’s cricket team ahead of the big final of Women's World Cup against England. MS Dhoni also joined the force and wished Mithali Raj and co. "All the Best" for the match in a superstitious manner in a special video message.
After Kapil Dev, it was MS Dhoni who gave the country a chance to celebrate a World Cup victory and now, the Indian women's team is just a step behind from making history at Lord's. Fans from the nook and cranny of the country wished team India to go for the glory and Dhoni became the latest entrant to praise the team’s effort while wishing them for the final.
The former India skipper, in a video message, wished the women luck but he showed his superstition part as well as he avoided some words. He also showed his willingness to share the experience of the big tournaments.
“Cricket is a game where superstition is involved and I am definitely superstitious about a few words, so I will not say those words. But, I will definitely share my experience and what I think is important. To start off, I think the women’s team has done exceedingly well throughout the World Cup,” Dhoni told the women’s team in a video shot by Star Sports.
Earlier, India had reached the final of the 2005 Women's World Cup in South Africa under Raj’s captaincy but they failed to lift the trophy after losing to Australia by 98 runs. Dhoni, who also led India to two World Cup glory - 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup - explained the pressure in the big tournaments and suggested the team to not to focus on the result.
“What is important is to embrace the occasion. To go into the finals, to win the finals. If it happens the next time, you will have to win all the games in the league stage and the quarter-finals or semi-finals (as per the format) to get into the final. So what’s important is not to focus on the result, not to think ‘what if we win, what if we don’t win’. What is important is that as a team you have done really well, all of you have contributed. That one extraordinary performance will give you the World Cup. It can be a brilliant catch, it can be a good run-out, it can be one good
Dhoni, known for his cool and calm attitude on the field, always tried to handle pressure in his own way. In this video, he tried to level down the pressure on the women’s team as he suggested them to enjoy the occasion.
“Keep it simple, enjoy the occasion as a World Cup final is something that doesn’t happen very often so embrace the occasion and definitely enjoy the moment because that is what cricket is all about. It is a sport and it is meant to be enjoyed, definitely, we are backing you and there is something that we want. But let’s make it a historic day for India,” he signed off.
