India got their Champions Trophy campaign off to a perfect start with a 124-run win over Pakistan. India posted a strong total of 319, thanks to their top order especially Yuvraj, who smashed 53 off 32 balls and Kohli praised him saying he felt like a club batter watching the southpaw bat.
India started their Champions Trophy title defence on a good note registering a huge win against arch-rivals Pakistan, using the D/L method. And understandably, Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli was satisfied with the team's effort. At the post-match conference, Kohli praised his teammate Yuvraj Singh’s effort and said, "Yuvi took pressure off when I couldn't get runs. The way he was hitting the ball, I felt like a club batter in front of him," as reported by TOI.
However, Kohli was not very happy with his side's fielding on the day and urged improvement from his side. "With the bat and ball, right up there - I would say nine out of 10. In the field, we were still 6 today. Very strong performance, we've taken the confidence from the practice games. We need to tighten our fielding to compete hard against the best teams."
During the high-voltage clash, the rain interrupted proceedings twice, but despite the breaks, the Indian batsmen remained focused. Rohit Sharma, who played after 7 months scored 91. Together with his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan who contributed 68, gave India a good start. "Quite delighted with all batsmen chipping in with runs. Shikhar and Rohit - last time we won here, the opening partnership was crucial. Rohit took some time going, but he's coming back from an injury, and international cricket is different to IPL," Kohli said.
Hardik Pandya, on the other hand, proved his selection in the Indian squad as he performed with both bat and ball. Kohli further added, "And Hardik, 18 off five balls, was outstanding. Speaking of his tactics for the game yesterday, We went with four seamers purely because we're playing Pakistan. They play spin really well, and most of them are right-handers."
Speaking of his tactics for the game yesterday Kohli revealed "We went with four seamers purely because we're playing Pakistan. They play spin really well, and most of them are right-handers. In pressure situations, to have mid-on, mid-off up and hit hard lengths, gives us an advantage. Against other sides, we might use two spinners, depending on their strengths."
Yuvraj Singh was awarded the Man of the Match for his blistering performance and reflecting on his team's efforts the southpaw said, "I thought we all batted really well. The openers gave us a good start, Virat finished well, and it gave me the opportunity to go and attack. You just have to go and back yourself, and tell the opposition that you're here to attack."
"I was lucky I was dropped, but I capitalised and I was hitting it well. I finished well. India-Pakistan is always a big game, and I think it has set us up really well. Hopefully, we'll take this confidence into the next game against Sri Lanka."
India will play their next match against Sri Lanka on June 8 at The Oval.
Did you know, When Sachin Tendulkar scored 200 runs India went on to win match by 153 runs, Sehwag’s 219 also handed India a 153-run win and now Rohit Sharma’s record breaking 264 also gave India a 153-run win.
