BCCI member Rajiv Shukla has confirmed that the new Indian head coach will be appointed before the team departs for the tour of Sri Lanka commencing on July 26. Anil Kumble stepped down as the coach of the Indian team following a difference of opinion with Indian skipper Virat Kohli yesterday.

India left for West Indies sans a coach after Anil Kumble resigned from the post and denied accepting the extension of his contract for the tour. However, BCCI member Rajiv Shukla, who is also the chairman of the Indian Premier League, confirmed that a coach would be appointed ahead of India's tour of Sri Lanka while stressing that the Indian captain will not influence the selection in any way.

"The BCCI has decided to search for the coach and before the Sri Lankan tour, we will find the best coach. When the coach is selected, captain has not got any role in that. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has been constituted and they will be recommending the names. After that, BCCI will decide who should be the coach," Shukla said today, reported Cricbuzz.

The current prospects for the coach include high-profile names such as Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput, and Dodda Ganesh who applied for the post after BCCI's notification. While Anil Kumble was a direct entry into the process he chose to walk away after deeming his relationship with Indian skipper Virat Kohli 'untenable' following which the Indian board has invited fresh applications.

"BCCI has tried its best to resolve the issue. The acting secretary, CEO had a discussion with Kumble and Kohli. They consulted the chairman of the COA also. They tried to resolve the whole issue, but ultimately no outcome could be found out. Finally, Kumble decided to move on and he has decided not to continue with the West Indies tour," Shukla said.

"Earlier, the decision was taken that Kumble will continue till the Sri Lanka tour. But he has decided to not go on with the West Indies tour. BCCI wishes him all the best for his future career."

The Cricket Advisory Committee(CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman now hold the responsibility of selecting India's next coach after interviewing the interested candidates. India will tour Sri Lanka for three Tests, five ODIs, and one T20I.
