Rahul Dravid will need to choose between BCCI and IPL
Rahul Dravid has excelled in his role as India U-19 and India A coach and as a mentor for various teams in the IPL. However, according to the new BCCI rules, Dravid will have to choose between his role for his country and that for an IPL franchise to avoid a conflict of interest.
As per the new rules issued by the BCCI's Committee of Administrators, the new BCCI contract will have a tenure of 12 months from the coming season. Currently, Dravid's contract as junior India coach is for a period of 10 months and this allows him two months to be involved in the IPL where he is now a mentor with Delhi Daredevils.
Sanjay Bangar (batting coach), R Sridhar (fielding coach) and physiotherapist Patrick Farhart, all had similar clauses in their respective contracts, with Bangar acting as coach of Kings XI Punjab. Sridhar was part of Bangar's IPL team while Farhart was a member of the Mumbai Indians' backroom staff.
Bangar and Sridhar's contracts have been increased from Rs. 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore by the CoA. Dravid, whose contract is believed to be in the range of Rs. 2.62 crore, is still renegotiating his contract terms.
ÂâWe will pay him (Dravid) what he is getting in the IPL. By having 12 months of his services, we can add responsibilities, maybe at the NCA where zonal camps happen during the IPL. The BCCI doesnât want another conflict of interest issue raised now, especially when the CoA is overseeing the boardâs affairs. The new contract will not only be for Dravid but also for the support staff,â Indian Express quoted an unnamed BCCI source as saying.
