India retained their no.1 Test ranking in the annual update released by the ICC on Thursday, after a successful home season. Meanwhile, South Africa narrowed the gap between them and India by gaining 117 points to keep hold of the second place. Australia, England and New Zealand complete the top 5.

The update gives a 50 per cent consideration to results from the 2015-16 series. And India held onto their top spot on the back of an incredible home season wherein they beat New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, and Australia.

The defeat in the series against India means that Australia have only managed to just hold onto the third position, having lost eight points as per the update. The result also means that England are breathing down Australia's neck with 99 points.

In the latter half of the table, Pakistan slipped to 93 from 97 rating points to take the sixth position, while the Lankans are just behind their Asian rivals.

New Zealand, Bangladesh and West Indies, all gained one, three and five points each. The Kiwis are placed 5th on the table, while Bangladesh, West Indies and Zimbabwe round off the top 10.

Here are the latest Test rankings:

1  India

3 Australia
4 England
5 New Zealand
6 Pakistan
7 Sri Lanka
8 West Indies
