Anil Kumble met the BCCI’s office-bearers and the Committee of Administrators (CoA) in Hyderabad on Sunday asking on behalf of the team a steep pay rise for centrally contracted players and the coaching staff. The CoA has also spoken to Indian skipper Virat Kohli about the matter via a video chat.
The Indian Express quoted an unnamed source as saying that Kumble has demanded 7.5 crores per annum for himself and a 150 per cent hike in retainer ship fees for Grade A players.
"If Kumble’s demands are accepted by the CoA a Grade A player could earn as much as Rs 10 crore including endorsement money, match fees, and revenue share," a BCCI source said.
The retainer fees had been doubled in March by the BCCI for the contracted players with Grade A players now getting Rs.2 crore per year, Grade B cricketers getting Rs 1 crore each per annum and Grade C players earning Rs 50 lakh each year. Kumble’s current salary is Rs 6.25 crore per annum.
Kumble’s demands are to bridge the gap between the earnings of some Test cricket players and some of those who play in the IPL.
A BCCI insider was quoted as saying, “Separately, the COA has spoken to them (Kumble and Kohli). Kumble gave a presentation on the revised compensation structure, which will be examined by the (BCCI) office-bearers and then they will have a discussion with the CoA. The presentation detailed how the revised structure should be made, adequately protecting the Test players in terms of income level. At the moment, what is happening is that some cricketers who play one-and-a-half months of IPL end up making more than some Test players who don’t play the IPL.”
Did you know, Anil Kumble holds the Indian record of taking most ODI wickets in a particular ground. He took 56 wickets in Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
