BCCI has asked former opener Virender Sehwag to apply for the post of Indian cricket team's head coach. In spite of Anil Kumble's staggering record with the team, the board refused to extend his contract and invited applications for the post via a notification released on Thursday (25th May).
A top BCCI official revealed that a board general manager had asked Sehwag to apply for the post of the Indian head coach during the IPL. Sehwag is a potential prospect and may challenge the current Indian coach Anil Kumble who has been given a direct entry into the selection process.
“We have contacted Sehwag during the IPL and asked him to consider applying for the job of India coach. But he won’t be the only one applying because we expect other former players to also
However, Sehwag denied receiving any such suggestions from the board regarding the application for the head coach. The former leg-spinner was denied an auto-extension by the BCCI, a move that has been criticised by many experts. The reason speculated by many behind such a move is Kumble's presentation that demanded a hike in the salaries of the players and the support staff.
“The board wants to go through the process of selection of coach again. Also, the next contract is likely to run until the 2019 World Cup, so even the length of the contract has to be taken into consideration before appointing the coach. We don’t want a scenario where the players and the coach are not on the same page,” said a BCCI insider.
The last date to apply for the position is 31st May after which selected candidates will appear before the high-profile Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) consisting of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly.
Kumble had been approached by none other than Sourav Ganguly a year ago when he was picked over Ravi Shastri to supervise the Indian team.
Although the CoA is insistent on keeping BCCI officials away from the selection process, the whole procedure would be overseen by BCCI CEO Rahul Johri.
“This is to ensure that the process remains fair. We don’t want a scenario where the decision to pick a coach gets influenced by what has happened in the pay negotiations where Kumble is bargaining hard with BCCI officials,” said an official.
In past, it has been seen that players have had influenced the board in selection of a coach as was the case with coaches like John Wright, Greg Chapell, Gary Kirsten and even Ravi Shastri who were directly or indirectly endorsed by players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.
A faction of CoA believes that the cricket committee should overlook the Indian players' views.
“We can’t let players decide their coach, this is certainly not the right way to go about the selection,” the official said.
Did you know, Virender Sehwag is the only Indian to have twice scored 1400-plus Test runs in a calendar year.
