On Saturday, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, secretary of Lodha Committee heavily criticized the BCCI for not giving current Indian coach Anil Kumble an extension based on the team's performance under him in the last one year. In response, the BCCI officials were indifferent to the committee's opinion.
BCCI on May 25th released a notification that invited applications for the post of the Indian head coach which was surprising judging by Anil Kumble's record with the team. The Indian board has since then received flak for the same. On Saturday, it was Lodha Committee secretary Gopal Sankaranarayanan who voiced his disagreement and displeasure about the move.
"It's extremely peculiar that administrators, who have to comply with the Supreme Court judgment, can disobey and continue in office while insisting that a silly little contract they have come up with has to be adhered to by coaches and cricketers. Clearly, a different law applies for the lawless," Gopal Sankaranarayanan, secretary of the Lodha Committee, told TOI on Saturday.
A year ago while Kumble was being appointed the Cricket Advisory Committee(CAC) consisting of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman had suggested the BCCI give Kumble a 4-year contract which would culminate with the 2019 World Cup. However, BCCI overlooked their suggestion and signed a one-year contract with the former leg-spinner.
"Kumble does not deserve this kind of treatment. This isn't the right way to treat your national coach. One year coaching tenure is a ludicrous thing to do. For a national coach,
"You can see that this is done deliberately by the board officials. You can't be giving a
Anil Kumble is known to be a close associate of the Lodha Committee and the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators which was speculated as a reason for the re-doing of appointment process by Sankaranarayanan. Moreover, Kumble's proposal for a hike in the salary of the players and an extra allowance for skipper Virat Kohli on account of the responsibility he shoulders, as well as a hike for the support staff including himself has been termed by many as the reason for non-renewal of his contract.
"Kumble has stood up for the players and pointed out that they don't get a penny from the ICC while it all goes into unaccounted pockets.
However, the BCCI remained unmoved and indifferent to the criticism by Sankaranarayanan. One of the BCCI officials stated that the committee had no role in the internal functioning of BCCI. He further went on to say that the committee would have questioned the board even if the process wouldn't have happened.
Did you know, Tendulkar is the only player to complete more than 30,000 runs in international cricket.
