Angelo Mathews has returned to the Sri Lankan squad for their three-match Test series in India starting in Kolkata on November 16, Sri Lanka Cricket announced. The selectors dropped batsman Kusal Mendis from the squad and spinner Akila Dhananjay is all set for his Test debut against the neighbors.
Mathews stayed out of the Test series against Pakistan due to a calf muscle injury, but for the upcoming tour of India, the former skipper has made a comeback to the side after declaring fit last week. Roshen Silva, the 28-year-old right-hand batsman who has played 103 first-class games, is the only uncapped player who will travel with the team.
The 22-year-old Mendis was being seen as one of the best batting prospects since making his debut in 2015, but he will miss out on a Test match after playing 22 consecutive matches since his debut. Right-handed opener Kaushal Silva was also dropped from the team that emerged victorious against Pakistan in the recent Test series held in the UAE along with fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep.
The squad will fly to India on Wednesday and will play their first Test at the Eden Garden, Kolkata from 16th November after two warm-up games.
India handed a 9-0 defeat to Sri Lanka when they toured their country but after beating Pakistan by 2-0 in Test series, Sri Lanka is hoping positive result in the upcoming tour.
