Dinesh Karthik believes that he is prepared and fit to play any role in the team, given the needs and demands of the Indian cricket team. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who has performed really well in the ODI series against New Zealand, also claimed that it's hard to make an international comeback.

Karthik’s strong performance in the domestic cricket earned him a recall in the squad and he grabbed that opportunity perfectly and scored 105 runs in three innings. His knocks not only helped the team’s cause but also backed his chance for a longer rope in the team.

“It is always harder to make an international comeback than play for the first time. When you are part of the playing XI after a long time, you have to fight a lot of mental pressure to prove yourself,” Dinesh Karthik told Hindustan Times.

Karthik has played 23 Tests, 76 ODIs, and 10 T20Is for India in which he scored 1000, 1470 and 148 runs respectively. He also had the experience of 157 first-class matches, in which he scored 9214 runs at an average of 42.07.

“I feel I am in a good position right now. I got my chances (against New Zealand) and I am happy to spend a good time in the middle and score runs,” says Karthik, who led Tamil Nadu to Vijay Hazare Trophy win in 2016-17 with a century in final.

In the recent past, Team India has been following a rotation policy which helped them check their bench strength ahead of the 2019 World Cup. But still they have failed to fix the middle-order conundrum as Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav were not up to the mark. So, Karthik can fancy his chances to grab the position as he claimed that he is flexible to play any role in the team.

“Right now the coach (Ravi Shashtri) and captain (Virat Kohli) are doing a great job. The team has been on a winning run and it’s great. For me, I would want to contribute in whatever role is given to me. I am not in a position to decide about my role. But I am ready to play my part in all three areas.”

After Kohli presents himself as an example for the team through his incredible fitness level, team’s fielding level raised big time.

“This team is one of the strongest simply because of the batting depth. Also, I was surprised with the way we were better than New Zealand in fielding.

“They are top fielders and we did better than them, which is quite an achievement. To stop those extra 10 to 15 runs is crucial in deciding games. Credit should be given to R Sridhar (fielding coach). I think if this team plays to its potential, it can pretty much achieve anything,” the Tamil Nadu lad said.
