Sourav Ganguly has praised MS Dhoni’s recent performances and stated that players like MS Dhoni should never be put under examination. He also praised Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s innings in the fourth ODI which helped India register a 168-run win against Sri Lanka.

Dhoni was all under scrutiny before the Sri Lanka series as he failed to score against West Indies. But the 36-year-old bounced back in style in the ongoing series and answered his critics through his performances. The fourth ODI of the series was Dhoni’s 300th ODI and he missed no chance to mark this event as a special occasion. The wicketkeeper-batsman claimed the world record for the most number of not-outs in the ODI history as he remained unbeaten for the 73rd time in his ODI career. The former Indian skipper Ganguly congratulated him and claimed that Dhoni will face the real challenge when he plays better sides in the upcoming tournaments.

“Massive congratulations to MSD for achieving a milestone: 300 matches is a lot and longevity is a yardstick for achieving greatness and excellence. He was put under the test before the series. Such players should never be put under the test and one must remember that in spite of being under pressure, his vast experience will see him through against such sides and he did exactly that. Such players who have contributed to their country so immensely just can't be asked to go one fine day because they will keep proving people wrong. Dhoni's real challenge will be when he starts playing better sides and, hopefully, he will raise the bar then too,” Ganguly wrote in his column for The Times of India.

In the fourth ODI, batting first, India amassed a massive 375 for 5 on the back of superb hundreds from captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma. The duo combined to cart the bowlers to all parts of the ground. Kohli, in particular, looked in devastating touch as he hit the ground running and played some eye-catching strokes to set the tone. Ganguly praised the duo for their innings.

“What impressed me most was how Virat dominated the innings and the intensity with which he batted. Yes, people may point out the quality of the attack, but to score big runs and that too a hundred is never easy and Virat did it with ease,” Ganguly added.

“He has a good mind and technique and, along with that, he has a great work ethic and the enormous desire to succeed which is a dangerous combination. He has raised the expectations from this team amongst all Indians.”

“Rohit Sharma also completed another 100. He is simply remarkable in the ODI format and the faith the selectors have reposed in him has provided him with enormous self-belief,” the 45-year-old said.
