Pat Cummins’ untimely slip nearly saw the umpire lose his nose as the ball slipped through his fingers on the brink of delivery and the player fell on his tracks. Cummins had been hitting the deck at breakneck speed today and that slip could have cost both of them serious injuries.
After staying safe and economical throughout the 1st ODI, where Pat Cummins didn’t get a single wicket, the man from Sydney seems to be setting the record straight today as he is bowling at 148-150 kmph regularly. Steve Smith decided to open with him and Ajinkya Rahane got a real taste of speed in the first two deliveries itself.
Eden Garden’s pitch curator had promised a competitive track and the early speed and bounce showed that he has kept his word. However, such pace is difficult to control at a consistent rate and Cummins got the taste of it in the hard way when he slipped in his tracks.
More importantly, the ball slipped through his fingers when his rear hand was dangerously close to the umpire and the official very nearly suffered a broken nose as it whizzed past him. The slip led Cummins to stop his run-up suddenly and the 24-year-old was fortunate in not twisting his ankle in the process.
However, this isn’t the first instance of a failed grip for Pat Cummins. Prior to this, in the Test match against Bangladesh, the fast bowler had it going horribly wrong for him as his attempted knuckle-ball reached the fielder standing at gully instead of going to Nasir Hossain waiting at the other end.
Even the umpire was confused whether it was a wide ball or a dead-ball and ended up giving it a no-ball.
