Australia vice-captain David Warner was all praise for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, admiring his achievements as a captain and his current role as a mentor to current skipper, Virat Kohli. The explosive batsman lamented the lack of key partnerships that led Australia to lose the second ODI by 50 runs.

David Warner has commended the role that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is playing for Team India at the moment and has credited the former Indian skipper for Virat Kohli’s success as captain. Australia’s vice-captain stressed how the calm Dhoni has been nurturing Virat Kohli well.

Speaking to India Today, Warner said, “MS Dhoni brought a sense of calmness to his captaincy. He did a great job as captain and he is still doing a great job, nurturing Virat and that is a great thing to do for a former captain. He is nurturing Virat and that is a good thing to do for both men.”

After Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy, Virat Kohli has led India for a total of 37 ODI games with India managing 29 victories in that stretch. If India manages another win in the third ODI on Sunday, Kohli would equal Dhoni’s brilliant record of nine consecutive wins as captain. That has been India's best run in ODIs between November 2008 and February 2009.

However, Warner has warned Kohli that his true challenge as a skipper will come when the side goes through bad patches. “Virat has not had a lot of non-success as captain but the real challenge comes when you start losing games. We are here for another three matches to go and hopefully we can turn that around and maybe we will see a different captain,” added Warner.

Australia are trailing the series by two games and they are expected to give everything in tomorrow’s game, which could potentially decide the outcome of the series. Batting has been a big letdown for them so far, and Warner acknowledged it ahead of the third game.

“We lost two early wickets, established a partnership in the middle but did not have that one batsman going on to get a big score. We always talked about how if you restrict the Indian team to under 300 in their conditions, you are going a long way to winning the game. We did not get those key partnerships in the middle,” he said.
