Mumbai Indians are set to miss out on the services of Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins for the remainder of the 2018 IPL season after he was ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury. Cummins will undergo a rehabilitation process in order to get fit for the Aussies tour of England in June.

The Ambani-owned Mumbai Indians franchise were one of the stronger sides going into IPL 2018. They were considerably stronger in the bowling department as they brought in the likes of Mustafizur Rahman and Mitchell McClenaghan to support Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. Pat Cummins was also picked up by theĀ Mumbai Indians team for a sum of Rs. 4.4 crore to provide competition for a bowling slot in the team.

But the latter has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL after he suffered a back injury, as Cricket Australia confirmed. The 24-year-old has "bone oedema in his vertebrae" ā€“ in other words, swelling in the joint, which is not the more serious stress fracture.Ā

"Pat experienced some back soreness during the fourth Test in South Africa. Follow-up scans have confirmed that he has bone oedema in his vertebrae. It is important that Pat has time off bowling, to prevent the injury becoming more serious and consequently, we have made the decision to rule Pat out of the IPL," CA's Bupa Support Team Physiotherapist, David Beakley told cricket.com.au.

Cummins played 13 consecutive Tests for Australia since being fast-tracked into the senior Australian team for theĀ South African tour in 2012, but his propensity to injuries far too often has resulted in he being sidelined for more than five years from the international cricket. However, after returning to the team in the series against India last year, he has become a mainstay in the team and has bowled 447.5 overs across all formats since the start of the last Australian summer.

The Australian cricket team is scheduled to tour England in June to play five One-day Internationals (ODIs) and a Twenty20 International (T20I) in order to prepare for the 2019 ICC World Cup. Cummins will undergo a rehabilitation process in order to get himself in peak condition of their tour in June.

"Pat will now undergo a period of recovery and rehabilitation and we will look to re-scan him in a few weeks to assess the healing. Following this we will be in a better position to decide on Pat's return to play timeline including participation in the limited overs tour of the UK," BeakleyĀ added.
