Australian cricketer Matthew Wade has warned his colleagues to not go too soft and lose their identity as an aggressive and passionate cricketing nation after the whole ‘Sandpapergate’ controversy. After being dropped from the national setup, Wade also said that he is looking to work on his game.

Over the years, Australian cricketers have been renowned for their aggression and ruthless nature on the pitch where they aimed to dig deep into their opponents’ psyche and play their brilliant mind games. But after the events that occurred in South Africa earlier this year, a lot of questions were raised about the culture and attitude of cricket in Australia. But Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade believed that although the team does need to make certain changes as to how they operate, it was essential to preserve their identity as strong and fierce players of the sport.

“When I got back into the team (after five straight losses in 2016), there was a lot of media and public stir about how they wanted the team to have a crack through that period. They felt like we were rolling over a little bit.

“I hope now we don’t go too far the other way and lose all our drive … and try and play like New Zealand. Every team needs a bit of competitiveness on the field. What happened in South Africa wasn’t a good look. But I just think we need to be careful about what direction we go in from here,” Wade told Cricketnext.

After a disappointing outing in his last trip with the Australian national team, Wade was dropped from the team as Cricket Australia looked to make major changes to the squad. However, Wade said that he was looking to work on his game and make a challenge for a spot in the squad.

“You want to be playing for Australia, but there was certainly a part of me that was feeling a touch lucky I wasn’t there (in Cape Town).”

“When I came in, the game was a lot different, there’s no doubt about that. But now the game is moving in a different direction and certainly with the stuff that’s happened in South Africa I will look at the way I go about it,” Wade said.
